General information about dementia screening
Dementia is a brain disorder that causes patients to have problems with thinking, decision-making, memory, mood, and abnormal behavior, such as :
- Frequent forgetfulness, even after recent events
- Asking the same questions repeatedly and not being able to remember the answers
- Frequent losing of things
- Easily getting lost, confused about direction
- Inability to make decisions, lack of planning skills, having confused thoughts, and not sequencing thoughts
- Unable to form sentences, stuttering
- Mood swings, easily irritated
- Not being aware of things that are known, such as not knowing what objects are, not being able to remember the names of close people, or not being able to use things that are used
Causes of dementia
The main causes of dementia can be divided into 2 factors:
- Age, because our brains will deteriorate with increasing age. Most patients with dementia tend to be around 65 years old and above
- Underlying diseases, the most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer's disease, followed by underlying diseases that affect the blood vessels in the brain, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Brain tumors, depression
Currently, dementia is not only occurring in the elderly. Younger people and working-age people are also starting to experience dementia. It is often the result of inappropriate lifestyle behaviors that cause insufficient blood flow to the brain, leading to cerebrovascular disease, which later leads to dementia, such as:
- Stress
- Lack of rest, sleeping late
- Eating foods high in fat and carbohydrates
- Regular consumption of alcoholic beverages
- Smoking
Therefore, screening for dementia risk does not always have to be in the elderly group, but can be done at any age.
