Why do we need to “test for cervical cancer” together with “test for HPV virus”?

  • Cervical cancer screening using Pathtezt together with HPV DNA test is considered an accurate test that reduces the risk of cervical cancer even more because it has a sensitivity of almost 100% in detecting cervical cancer. It also checks for cervical cancer cells together with DNA testing for HPV strains related to cervical cancer, along with a deeper look to see if there is an infection with HPV strains 16 and 18. If there is no infection, it can be assured that within 3-5 years of being tested, the chance of getting cervical cancer is very low.

At what age should I get tested? How often should I get tested?

  • Generally, women should get a cervical cancer screening at the age of 30, at least every 3 years, excluding other gynecological examinations, which are recommended to be tested once a year, but can start testing as early as 25 years as appropriate, in order to detect cervical cancer from the beginning, which has an effective treatment and can be completely cured. Especially those who are at high risk of cervical cancer, such as taking immunosuppressive drugs, having HIV or having a history of abnormal cervical cells, having had a cervical surgery or hysterectomy due to abnormal cells.

Cervical cancer screening

  • Women aged 25 and over should undergo a cervical cancer screening, also known as a Pap smear. The doctor will take a sample of cells from the vagina and examine it under a microscope to check for abnormalities.
  • Women aged 25-49 will be advised to undergo a cervical cancer screening every 3 years, and women aged 50-64 will be advised to undergo a screening every 5 years. For women aged 65 and over, screening is recommended only for those who have not been screened since the age of 50, or screening is recommended for those whose previous test results showed abnormalities.

Risk factors

In addition to HPV infection, there are other risk factors that can cause cervical cancer, as follows:

  • Smoking
  • Having a compromised immune system
  • Taking birth control pills for more than 5 years
  • Symptoms of cervical cancer

The initial symptoms of cervical cancer include:

  • A large amount of abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal discharge that is pus-like, foul-smelling, or watery-like discharge from the vagina
  • Spotting
  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Bleeding outside of menstruation

Note

  • The recommended age for cervical cancer screening from each institution may vary, ranging from 21, 25, 30, 35, or 40 years. Therefore, you may decide to start screening based on the appropriate age, the first time you have sex, or other risks of each individual.
