What is the influenza vaccine?
- The influenza vaccine used in Thailand is made from dead viruses. It is an injectable vaccine, made to protect against 3-4 strains of influenza viruses, as recommended by global influenza surveillance agencies as the most prevalent strains that year.
- Getting a flu shot will help boost immunity against influenza viruses that may be prevalent in that season, so those who receive the vaccine are at a lower risk of complications.
How is the vaccine administered?
- It is usually administered in the upper arm, but in infants and young children, it is administered in the thigh. Subcutaneous injections can be done for people aged 18-64 years.
- For children under 8 years old, 2 injections should be given in the first year, spaced 1 month apart.
