Things to know about the package

3 infectious diseases for adults to watch out for

1. Diphtheria

  • It is a disease caused by a type of bacterial infection. It is easily transmitted through contact with secretions or droplets in the saliva, phlegm, or mucus of an infected person or carrier if they breathe, cough, or sneeze on each other. This germ has an incubation period of approximately 1-7 days. When infected, it causes severe inflammation of the throat, resulting in a blockage of the respiratory tract. It also causes complications, which can lead to myocarditis and neuritis. The incidence of diphtheria is high in adolescents and adults because the immunity gained from vaccination in childhood is reduced.

Symptoms of diphtheria

  • When infected, there will be a low fever, headache, chills, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Nausea, vomiting, severe fatigue, if there is inflammation of the larynx, there will be coughing, hoarseness. In some cases, if the symptoms are severe, there may be difficulty breathing and death.

2. Pertussis

  • It is a contagious disease of the respiratory system caused by bacteria called pertussis, which are found in the throats of patients with the disease in the early stages. It is spread by direct contact with secretions from the sick person, causing inflammation of the respiratory tract lining. The incubation period is about 7-14 days, causing severe coughing until breathing is difficult.

Symptoms of pertussis

  • Initial symptoms are similar to the flu, with a low fever, sneezing, and a runny nose. Then there will be a series of coughs, which are usually severe and continue for more than 3 weeks until the patient feels very tired and exhausted. There may be visible swollen veins in the neck, or broken blood vessels in the whites of the eyes or urine leakage. For those who have not been vaccinated or have not received the full dose, complications can occur that can be life-threatening.

3. Tetanus

  • Tetanus is a disease caused by toxins from the bacteria called tetanus, which is considered severe and causes pain to the patient, affecting the nervous system, causing the muscles in the jaw and neck to twitch. Once the toxin enters the nervous system, it takes months for a person to recover from a tetanus infection. After the bacteria enter the body through a wound, symptoms begin within the first few days and may last for several weeks. The incubation period is 5 days to 15 weeks, but is most common between 6 and 15 days.

Symptoms of tetanus

  • Symptoms of tetanus include: Initial symptoms of pain and muscle spasms, a locking of the jaw, a stiff neck, trouble swallowing, abdominal muscles, and painful muscle contractions that last for several minutes, especially contractions of the breathing muscles, which can make breathing difficult and fatal. Muscle spasms are triggered by jerking, loud noises, touch, or bright lights, sweating, high blood pressure, and a rapid heart rate.

Who should get the diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (Tdap) vaccine?

In addition to children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly should also get the vaccine. Here are the recommendations:

  1. Age 11-18 years : It is recommended to get a Tdap shot at age 11 or 12 (children who have not received a DTaP shot can get one at age 7). For children and adolescents who have not received a full DTaP shot by age 7, they should get a Td shot (combined tetanus-diphtheria vaccine) and Tdap shot.
  2. Age 19-64 years : It is recommended to get a Tdap shot at least once in their lifetime. After that, get a tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap) shot or a tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine every 10 years.
  3. Elderly people 65 years and older may get a Tdap booster shot only once.

Adults or elderly people who have never been vaccinated before At least 3 doses of diphtheria and tetanus vaccine should be given :

  • The first dose can be started immediately.
  • The second dose should be at least 1 month after the first dose.
  • The third dose should be at least 6 months after the second dose.

It is recommended that the first dose be the diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (Tdap) vaccine. The second and third doses can be the diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (Tdap) or the diphtheria and tetanus (Td) vaccine.

Side effects

  • Severe allergic reactions to the diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (Tdap) vaccine are rare, but side effects can occur, such as swelling at the injection site, headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and fever. However, the symptoms are usually mild and resolve on their own within 2-3 days.

Who should avoid or abstain from vaccination?

  • Those who have had a history of severe allergic reactions.
  • Those who have had brain abnormalities, such as coma, decreased consciousness, or prolonged seizures without a known cause, within 7 days after receiving the previous dose.
