Pneumococcal vaccine
- Infection caused by severe and invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria can cause bloodstream infections, meningitis, severe pneumonia, and even disability and death. Pneumococcus causes respiratory infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, pneumonia, and severe invasive infections such as meningitis, bone and joint infections, and bloodstream infections, which are common causes of death in the elderly. The elderly are more at risk of invasive pneumococcal infections than young people. Therefore, getting this vaccine is beneficial in reducing the severity of the disease.
Currently, the pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine (Pneumococcal vaccine) For the elderly, there are 3 types, which cover different strains :
- 13-strain conjugate vaccine (PCV13) covers 13 strains of pneumococcal bacteria that cause most diseases.
- 15-strain conjugate vaccine (PCV15) covers 15 strains of pneumococcal bacteria by preventing bloodstream infections and meningitis from severe pneumococcal diseases.
- 23-strain polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV-23) covers 23 strains of pneumococcal bacteria that cause severe diseases, including strains that are often drug-resistant.
Recommendations : Inject for those aged 65 and over, those with compromised immune systems, and patients with chronic diseases.
