Pathotopic bile duct drainage (PTBD) is a treatment for bile obstruction caused by various causes such as biliary stones, bile duct cancer, or biliary duct stenosis due to inflammation, which prevents bile from draining normally. The bile drainage tube is inserted through a small rubber tube on the skin of the patient's abdomen through the liver tissue to the bile duct in the liver. The bile that is drained will be stored in a bag outside the patient until the cause of the obstruction can be treated.
Preparation before receiving treatment
- Before the procedure, the patient should stay in the hospital for 1 day before the treatment to prepare the body, clean the skin in the area where the drainage tube will be inserted.
- Blood test in the laboratory to assess liver function and blood clotting.
- Must abstain from food and drink for at least 6 hours before the examination.
- Before the examination, the patient must sign the consent form. If the patient is unable to sign by himself, the caregiver or guardian with legal rights must sign on his/her behalf.
