Who “should not” receive the measles, mumps, and rubella combined vaccine?
- Have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine.
- Allergy to gelatin or the antibiotic neomycin.
- Pregnant women.
- Have an immunodeficiency condition, such as HIV infection.
- Have cancer or are undergoing cancer treatment, either by radiation or chemotherapy.
- Take medications that affect the body’s immune system, such as steroids.
Those who have received blood, blood components, or immunoglobulin may receive the measles, mumps, and rubella combined vaccine, but should consult a doctor first, as there must be a gap between vaccinations. If you have a fever or are acutely ill, you should postpone receiving the vaccine until you are well. If you have a minor cold without a fever, you can receive the vaccine.
Adverse effects that may occur after receiving the measles, mumps, and rubella combined vaccine:
- It may cause a severe allergic reaction. However, severe allergic reactions to vaccines are very rare. Most people who receive the measles, mumps, and rubella combined vaccine do not have any problems.
- Possible reactions after vaccination include pain, swelling and redness at the injection site. A low-grade fever, joint pain, rash, and swollen lymph nodes may occur 6-12 days after vaccination. These symptoms are usually mild and will resolve on their own within 2-3 days. Joint pain will resolve within 1-3 weeks. Severe reactions are rare.
- If there is pain, swelling and redness at the injection site, a cold compress can be applied. If there is a low-grade fever, fever-reducing medication can be taken. However, if there are other abnormalities, a doctor should be consulted.

- Those who have received the combined measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine should use birth control for at least 1 month after vaccination.
- A combined measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine may be considered for breastfeeding women.
- Even if there is a history of egg allergy, this vaccine can still be given, but the doctor must be notified and symptoms after vaccination must be closely monitored.
